Biography
Alyssa Martin is a contemporary choreographer and an enthusiastic advocate for the creation of new dance work. In 2024, Martin was appointed Artistic Producer, Creative Action and in this role, she will support Toronto’s dance community and seek pathways to allow unique collaboration and innovation to flourish. Prior to this role, Martin worked with The National Ballet of Canada as Associate, Artist Development Programmes under the mentorship of Robert Binet, with the support of the Metcalf Foundation, and has participated in Creative Action programmes as a choreographer.
Martin’s choreographic commissions include Desperate Drama of Red for the National Ballet’s MAD HOT BALLET Gala, Bin Chicken with Toronto Dance Theatre, PUS with Susie Burpee and Linnea Swan and Sugar Water for the National Ballet's YOU dance programme. Her choreographic collaborations extend to theatre, film, live music, musical theatre and opera including four seasons at Stratford Festival. Martin has been recognized with Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Original Choreography and Production, Jack McAllister Award, Bulmash-Siegel Award and Canadian Stage Award for Direction.
Martin is the founder and Artistic Director of Rock Bottom Movement, a company dedicated to the ongoing creation of absurd dance theatre through their anti-patriarchal approach to comedy and tenderness. Founded in 2012, Rock Bottom has researched, created and presented work throughout Canada and abroad including favourites hollow mountain, DINO, Sex Dalmatian, KID SISTER and Big Time Miss.
